25 Percent Brussels Population are Muslim; "1 in 4 Brussels residents has Islamic roots"

More than 250,000 of the total population of one million inhabitants of Brussels,Belgium, has Muslim roots. It was based on the results of a study conducted by the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, published on Friday, (18/11).

The study was conducted by an expert on the Catholic University of Louvain sosilogiDasetto Felice. Brussels, which is the political capital of the European Union, is home to half of all Muslims in Belgium. The study describes Belgium as oneEuropean city whose inhabitants are many who adhere to Islam, such as in Birmingham, England.

The presence of Islam in Brussels from day to day more and more visible with the number of mosques and minarets in the city. Also more and more women who wearveils and the more established Muslim organizations.

According Dasetto study, as reported by Eurasia Review, belief in Islam is apowerful force for mobilizing the people. Even that power exceeds the power of the Catholic Church and political parties in Brussels.

Meanwhile, the weekly Le Vif / L'Express wrote Brussels became one of the mostmulticultural city in Europe. Muslims have become a majority in some places.

Muslim inhabitants of Brussels would be filled up over the next 20 years is a thingthat can not be ruled out. In early 2010, the Brussels population reached 1.1 million.Hence, by the Planning Bureau, Brussels population will increase another 250,000 people, 20 years. According to the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis, by 2018 the population of Brussels may be as many as 1.2 million people.

Some 25 percent of the people living in the Greater Brussels Region has Islamic roots. That’s according to a study carried out by the UCL, the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve. It’s the first time large-scale research has been done in this specific area.

The study is called “L’Iris et le Croissant” and was carried out by Felice Dasetto, a sociologist and a professor at the UCL. He has a track record of 30 years in issues relating to Muslims, the mix between different cultures and radicalisation.

His large-scale research shows that over 250,000 Brussels citizens, a quarter of the local population, has Islamic roots. Brussels accounts for half of the total number of Muslims in our country. The figure puts Belgium among other European cities with a big Muslim presence like Birmingham in England.

The Islamic presence becomes more and more visible: there are more mosques and minarets, more women wearing a veil and more Muslim organisations. The study points out that the Islamic faith has the power to mobilise people to a a very big extent, more than for example the Catholic Church or political parties. Only football can get more people out of their homes.

Researchers also warn that ultraconservative wings in the Islam are gaining more ground in Brussels.
