Muslim couples who recently married to the Mayor of Lyon filed suit after local officials asked the bride's veil worn off. NaasimaA, thus the name of the bride, was also asked to remove the veil that covers her face during the ceremony which took place in June, last year at City Hall.

The mayor said he was ready to negotiate with a partner, andexpects Ben Ahmed could be more considerate when attending a wedding amcam it.

A newlywed Muslim couple sued the mayor of Lyon, France, because the bride was told to remove her veil at a town hall wedding ceremony, her lawyer said.

The bride, identified only as Nassima A., was asked to remove the veil, which covered only her hair, during the ceremony at Lyon town hall in June, The Local reported.

"Nassima thought it was an order and did not think twice about removing her veil. She thought she had to do it to get married and took it off in front of everybody," Gilles Devers, her lawyer, told the French daily Liberation.

The bride felt humiliated during the ceremony, Devers said.

Fatiha Ben Ahmed, the deputy mayor of Lyon's 9th district, asked the bride to show her hair and told her she looked "very pretty" without a veil.

The woman and her husband are seeking $63,887 in damages in the suit against Lyon Mayor Gerard Collomb.

Collomb said he's prepared to negotiate with the couple and that Ben Ahmed could have been more sensitive.

"Nassima thought it was an order and did not think twice about removing her veil. She thought she had to do it to get married and took it off in front of everybody," says her lawyer Gilles Devers in an interview with the French daily Liberation. He says she felt humuliated during the ceremony.

The deputy mayor of Lyon’s 9th district, Fatiha Ben Ahmed, who asked the bride to bare her hair, told the bride that she looked "very pretty" without a veil.

The couple are now suing the mayor of Lyon Gérard Collomb and demanding €50,000 in damages. The mayor says he is ready to negotiate with the couple and admits Ben Ahmed could have been more sensitive during Nassima's wedding ceremony.

After the incident the local official Ben Ahmed said she had acted to defend the rights of women.

In France, officials who conduct wedding ceremonies are required to check the identities of the bride and groom. However in this case, Nassima’s veil was not covering her face.
